	A beached bird. Its arrival was linked to the massive deposits of Sargassum algae produced on our coasts during the last months. The species regularly breeds in the Canary Archipelago, but there are also migrant individuals during migration periods, like this, which normally are difficult to see.

Any idea when the Sargassum influx really took off in the Canaries? The earliest example i could find for Madeira was 29-05-2023 but it lasted until 27-12-2023 before i started to see large fields of Sargassum in Porto Moniz. Gr. M.

Hi again.

I'm not a marine biologist or expert in algae, but it seems the Sargassum populations come from another part of the Atlantic, and two different species of this genus are arriving on the islands. Some marine biologists are studying this phenomenon affecting also the Madeiran coasts.

And regarding the dates of the arrival of the Sargassum to the islands, we know that in the case of the Canaries began this year, by March or even before.

I suppose the bird died in the sea close to the coast where I found it, during its migration movement, and later became associated with algae deposition. Probably the association between the Quail and the algae is only accidental.
