I searched for comparable calls within the other taxa. Then I measured two things: -length of a single modulation -total length of descending part of the call The picture shows why I struggled with Eastern Yellow Wagtail (''plexa'') for a while, also because of the grey plumage. In the end I got back to my first impression in the field, voting for Iberian Wagtail. While I know picking out just one call is dangerous, I think this plexa is quite representative among the lower frequency calls, which are more scarce. This call shows a faster modulation and a shorter total length of the descending part of the call, compared to the Noordwijk bird. Besides this, the 3nd and 3rd call of the Noordwijk bird, show the less steep (''sliding'') descending parts of the single modulations, which I believe are typical for Iberian Wagtail. Together with the flava-like eyebrow it doesn't fit my image of plexa and feldegg (Balkan). The Noordwijk birds i.m.o. strongly resembles the calls of an unseen bird on the same location last year 23rd August, giving me the impression that Iberian Wagtail might just be an overlooked (sub)species in late summer in North-Western Europe. |
