Er is voorgesteld om deze soort te splitsen in 16: The widespread polytypic Red-bellied Pitta (E. erythrogaster) is split into 16 species, following Irestedt et al. (2013). Red-bellied Pitta now is restricted to two subspecies, erythrogaster and propinqua, and the English name is changed to Blue-breasted Pitta to minimize confusion with the former, widespread species. Ranges are included after the species name to clarify their patterns of occurrence, especially since some have yet to be reported to eBird. @overnemen? Ik denk dat het realiteit is en een andere realiteit wordt dat je niets meer "compleet" kunt krijgen. De Island Thrushes gaan er vast ook nog een keer aan. Geisoleerde populaties die nooit meer met elkaar in contact komen en allemaal een verschillend kleed hebben. Moeten we toch naar Goodenough, Louisiade (en natuurlijk St Kilda voor de Winterkoning....)

However, his conclusion that ‘31 geographically contiguous manifestations of plumage types’ (of which 18 occur in the OBC region) could potentially be considered as biological species may gain little traction, given that morphological similarity within this species is not correlated with taxonomy (Jones & Kennedy 2008). Clearly this is a taxon for which considerable further analysis of ecological, genetic, morphological and vocal differentiation is necessary before a clear picture of species limits can be obtained.
