bericht van Luke Steele: 35 million [common] pheasants and 6.5 million [red-legged] partridges [are released for hunting annually in the UK after being] factory farmed, with many of the egg-producers living in battery cages. 25 per cent of these birds will die before shooting season and 40 per cent of the remainder will be shot down and not retrieved. On top of that, half a million red grouse are shot on the moors - requiring intensive management such as draining, burning over deep peat to boost the numbers and in the process flooding towns. All of these shooting estates will slaughter native predators such as stoats, weasels, foxes and in some cases badgers and birds of prey.
